Intro

Throughout my creative endeavours and personal projects I’d often run into a conundrum. Sometimes I need to design and create media, visuals, logos, etc for them. This wouldn’t be an issue if I knew how to design such things or if I was creative in that sector of the arts.

The majority of my projects can do with a logo, especially my portfolio website (for favicons, buttons, etc) and anything I intend to make public and share with the world.

What makes a good logo According to Wix

Found this article by Wix that goes over some aspects of logo design.

FeatureWhy it matters
SimplicityKeep your logo simple. A clean, straightforward design is easier to recognize and looks great no matter the size or background.
Representation of your brand identityYour logo should clearly represent your brand and connect with your target audience.
Memorability and originalityCreate a unique logo that helps your brand stand out and stay memorable.
TimelessnessDesign with longevity in mind. Avoid trends so your logo remains fresh and relevant for years to come.
VersatilityMake sure your logo works well everywhere, whether on your website, business cards or merchandise, without losing impact.

Tools

There are a plethora of ways to go about designing logos digitally, I don’t any know any of them well enough to recommend, but here are the ones I found when researching.

OSS

I try to support OpenSource projects whenever I can. The following were recommended to me.

Inkscape

A popular OSS program for vector graphics and logo design. Flexible editing of shapes, text, and colors, is regularly updated, and is suitable both for beginners and more advanced users. The learning curve is steep but it offers a lot of flexibility and control over your designs.

Krita

Primarily a digital painting and illustration tool, is suitable for creating more artistic or hand-drawn style logos and illustrations. Its UI is designed for illustrators and artists, but it’s approachable enough for beginners, especially those wanting to experiment without a tablet, which makes it great for my needs.
